One thing that most retro gamers can agree on, is that we love our gaming past. But this typically goes on much further and beyond just loving our games. We tend to love the generation, the culture, and most importantly, the toys. We love toys around here! Growing up, I think many of us also enjoyed playing to Hot Wheels cars, and this evenings news will be combining our love for both toys and retro video games. It has been recently announced that Mattel is working on releasing a new set of Hot Wheels cars, with a Super Mario Brothers theme, for a very special occasion!
In an ironic twist in the world of retro video gaming, Mattel (who were the masters behind the Intellivision), will be bringing the Nintendo franchise to a brand new set of Hot Wheels cars in honor of the 30th anniversary of our favorite plumber. The very first Super Mario Brothers game was first released for the original Famicom on September 13, 1985. (Of course, Mario has a much richer history than just being our favorite plumber! He’s doubled as a construction worker, carpenter, doctor, tennis/golf guru, and beyond! This upcoming set of six cars, which is part of Mattel’s “Our Pop Culture” series, will feature 4 with a “Super Mario Bros. 30th Anniversary” logo, with the remaining 2 being based on Super Mario Kart and Dr. Mario. The complete set is scheduled to be as follows:
- Dairy Delivery (Super Mario Bros.)
- Cool-One (Super Mario Bros. 2)
- School Busted (Super Mario 3)
- 8 Crate Delivery (Dr. Mario)
- Volkswagen T1 Panel Bus (Super Mario World)
- A-OK (Mario Kart)
The entire set is slated to be released in October, but no word yet on pricing information. Of course, there are lots of other great celebrations in honor of the Super Mario Brothers milestone anniversary, including the upcoming and anticipated “Super Mario Maker“, which is coming out for the Wii U in September. Be sure to stay tuned to Retro Game Network for more Mario Madness!
